Each census year contains two sections. The first section contains the names of the head of every family that are organized numerically according to each member’s assigned family number. If there is an asterisk next to a number, this means that two or more families live in the same dwelling. The second section contains the heads of family again; this time it is organized alphabetically.

Please note that there are some exceptions depending on the town. The introductions of each town’s census will give researchers the context necessary to proceed and find the names they are looking for.

Information included in the second sections:

  • Names of the family members
  • Dwelling numbers
  • If applicable, names with “B” or “M” listed next to them identify a Black or Mulatto, respectively
  • How many children a part has is identified by a number in parenthesis. Ex. (5)
  • How many times someone married is identified in parenthesis with an “M-.” Ex. (M-2).
  • Relationship (if not obvious)
  • Occupation
  • Value of property
  • Where born (if other than Dutchess County)
