This collection was preserved and made accessible online through the NYG&B's Digitize New York initiative.
This collection consists of two volumes of A Chronological History of the Town of Candor, a locally compiled historical work by Donald F. Weber, historian, documenting the development of the Town of Candor, Tioga County, New York. Together, the volumes present a continuous chronological narrative spanning from the town’s geological background and early settlement through 1994.
Volume 1 covers Candor’s history from its geological context and earliest settlement through 1920. Volume 2 continues the chronology from 1921 to 1994 and functions as a direct continuation of the first volume. Entries were selected to illustrate aspects of daily life in the community and to document social, cultural, and economic change over time. With the exception of an introductory geological section, the work does not address the region’s geological or political prehistory.
The history was compiled using a combination of personal interviews, observations, and interpretation by the author, alongside published and documentary sources including newspapers, town records, bank calendars, directories, and other published materials. The work reflects a locally grounded perspective and serves as a consolidation of historical information drawn from a variety of sources.
Each volume is fully searchable using the search box, but researchers may also browse through Volume 1 and Volume 2 in full.
This collection was digitized in partnership with the Candor Historical Society.
