The NYG&B strives to make the pursuit of genealogy and family history accessible to and a welcoming space for everyone. Families of varying backgrounds and groups are actively involved in genealogy today, and the NYG&B is committed to empowering all people to discover and learn more about their family history.
However, in pursuing family history, historical records and other related materials might contain language that is harmful, offensive, and/or problematic in the present day. The NYG&B recognizes it is best practice to retain such information so as not to censor or alter the historical record and to maintain an understanding of the context of creation. Where possible, the NYG&B will provide a Content Note to inform participants of potential situations.
As language, conventions, and archival best practices evolve, the NYG&B will adapt its own language and description practices accordingly. We welcome feedback regarding language concerns in our materials, which can be submitted at webmaster@nygbs.org.
