Name

Albert Huppenge. Albert’s name was found in only a single record, that of his 1660 burial.[1]

Origin

Albert Huppenge’s place of origin is uncertain. He may have come from the hamlet of Zwiggelte in the parish of Beilen, Drenthe, the Netherlands, where the unusual name Heppinge/Hoppinge appears near Sobring/Seubering throughout the 1600s.[2] In 1630, Jannes Heppinge, Roelof Sobringe, and Jan Sobringe were among the 17 land owners taxed in Zwiggelte.[3] Jan Roelofsen Seubering (spelling variation of Sobringe) from Beilen later settled in Flatbush.[4] Albert Huppenge may have been part of the same group of Flatbush settlers from Drenthe.

Albert Huppenge probably lived in Flatbush, where he was buried.[6]

Biographical Details

Albert Huppenge was buried in the Dutch Reformed Church of Flatbush on 5 November 1660.[7] His was the first Flatbush burial for which a record survives. Not described as a child of someone else, he was probably an adult, born between say 1600 and 1635.
