Over the past 300 years the Episcopal Church has been the spiritual home of numerous New York City families. Its registers form a major resource for genealogists, even more so because many non-Episcopalians also appear in them.
Previously published accounts of Hart Island have treated its early history inadequately. Land, probate, and other records familiar to genealogists help in tracing the ownership of the island prior to its purchase by New York City.
Organized in 1793 and 1805, respectively, Christ Church and St. Stephen's were the second and fifth Episcopal parishes to be established in New York City (then Manhattan).
