New York City Assessment Rolls 1699-1734

A little-used reel of microfilm in the NYG&B Collection contains tax assessment rolls for New York City for many years from 1699 to 1734. These rolls can be helpful in confirming that someone was a city resident and identifying the ward in which they lived and the value of their property. Since renters as well as owners of real estate are included, these rolls are close to being a record of all heads of household, and this is especially useful since there is only one census for these years, taken in 1703.
