New York State Death Index (1880 - 1955)

This collection contains images of the official New York State death index produced by the Department of Health. Images are organized by year, and each year contains names arranged alphabetically by the first letter of last name.

Researchers should note that certain municipalities are not included in this index, and some are included only for certain time periods. If you're searching for ancestors in New York City, Albany, Buffalo or Yonkers, please click here for details.

The images in this collection will often provide the following details:

  • Name of decedent
  • Place of death
  • Date of death
  • Certificate number – with the certificate number, you can order the original death certificate.

These images have been made public thanks to the organization Reclaim the Records. Researchers should note that some of the original scans are of low quality and may be difficult to read.

New York City deaths

For the most part, this index does not include New York City deaths. However, you may be able to find death records before Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island officially became part of New York City in 1898.

See our New York State Vital Records Guide for advice on obtaining death records for New York County, or other New York City boroughs after 1898.

Albany, Buffalo and Yonkers deaths prior to 1914

Deaths that occurred in Albany, Buffalo and Yonkers before 1914 are not recorded in this index, because those records were stored locally from 1880 to 1914.

See our New York State Vital Records Guide to see how to obtain records from those municipalities during this time period.
