Last night’s Genealogy Roadshow took us to Miami, Florida. Most of the episode was filmed at History Miami Museum, a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate that works to gather, organize, and preserve Miami’s history (be sure to check out their amazing Digital Photo Archive.) The episode covered a wide range of history, from early American history, to the history of the Philippines in WWII, to Cuba and the Spanish-American War. Here are some of the resources I took away from last night’s big reveals:
- National Archives Military Records of WWII: Philippine Archives Collection – These records supply vital information and context for people who believe their ancestors were involved in the Philippine resistance against Japan during WWII.
- Logbooks of the US Navy at the National Archives – These records can help put together the story of an officer’s day to day life in the US Navy.
- Bolling Family Association – Think you might be related to Pocahontas? If you can trace your ancestors back to Robert Bolling, I, then there’s a chance!
- Tuskegee Syphilis Study Administrative Records, 1929 - 1972 – If you think your ancestors may have been involved in this tragedy, you’ll have to contact National Archives at Atlanta to view the administrative records.
- Freedom of Information Act Request Form – Do you think your ancestors might have been in the CIA? It doesn’t hurt to ask.
