Please join the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) for this program celebrating Juneteenth. Presented by Kenyatta D. Berry, My Grandfather Took It to the Grave will discuss stories that family members took to their graves and those that relatives may not want to discuss. Ms. Berry will provide techniques for working with those roadblocks and understanding how those stories have helped shaped identity, using African American genealogy resources.
Kenyatta D. Berry is an Emmy-nominated genealogist and author of The Family Tree Toolkit: A Comprehensive Guide to Uncovering Your Ancestry and Researching Genealogy (Skyhorse Publishing, 2018). She is a Past President of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), and a scholarship was established in her honor in 2021 and awarded in 2023. Kenyatta served as the 2019 Honorary Chair for Preservation Week and earned recognition as a “Newsmaker” in American Libraries magazine. With a career spanning over two decades, she excels as an author, attorney, lecturer, professional genealogist, and television personality.
Kenyatta’s expertise in African American genealogy, enslaved ancestral research, and DNA analysis positions her as a prominent figure in the field. Notably, her role as a TV host on “Genealogy Roadshow” (PBS) garnered widespread acclaim, attracting over 1.5 million viewers per episode.
