These records are from the town of Sheldon, located on the western border of Wyoming County. The land was originally deeded to Oliver Phelps and Lemuel Chipman in 1804 from the Holland Land Company. The Town of Sheldon was founded in 1808 when it was separated from its parent Town of Batavia. It was originally named after the mother of Chauncey Loomis who was a New York Judge and State Senator. Her maiden name was Sheldon. In 1811 the Town of Attica was formed from the Town of Sheldon and then in 1818 the Towns of Bennington and Arcade were separated from the town as well.
This collection includes various town records from 1808 to 1940. These records include tax assessments, vital records, annual town meeting minutes, docket books, overseer of the poor records, election poll books, early poll lists, and military records. Some of the records include references to Genesee County as it was the parent county to Wyoming.
