This collection was preserved and made accessible online through the NYG&B's Digitize New York initiative.
This collection is comprised of the digitized original of the 1845 New York state census enumeration for the town of Schuyler in Herkimer County. This is the only surviving copy, and it has not been microfilmed or digitized elsewhere. The 66 images of the Schuyler (town) 1845 census may be browsed. The original copy of the census will be sent to the New York State Library for permanent preservation. Read the story of its preservation here: “Rediscovered in Schuyler: A Lost 1845 Census Offers New Clues into New York’s Past,” New York Researcher, vol. 35, no. 3 (Fall 2025): 73–75.
The 1845 census asked 48 questions and recorded the head of household’s name and provides information about the household (questions 1 to 29), including the number of family members born in New York, the number of family members born in New England, elsewhere in the US, and in specified countries. For more information on the questions, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/censusq.
This manufacturing (30 and 31) and agricultural (32 to 48) questions enlighten researchers to the daily and yearly lives of the residents and their neighbors.
