[F04] DAR Records: Don't Research New York without Them!
Use this thread to discuss DAR Records: Don't Research New York without Them!, presented by Eric G. Grundset, MLS.
Session Description
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the New York State Organization DAR, and the chapters in the state have produced a huge collection of valuable genealogical materials. Researchers must tap these rich resources in the search for hidden family information. Materials in Albany, New York City, and Washington, D. C., and how to access them are the focus of this lecture.

DAR applications — adoption situation
Hi — I’ve been thinking of applying for the DAR. My mom was adopted; I was fortunately able to get her original birth certificate, which (along with many DNA matches) proves her birth mom’s identity. Her birth mom is a descendant of multiple lines of American Revolution soldiers, including on the (CT) Avery, (MA/CT) Allen/Allyn, and Colborn lines. I’ve seen many SAR/DAR applications in Ancestry hints that include these lines. How can I most easily connect the dots up 2-3 generations from my mom’s birth mom to the latest American Revolution descendant whose trail is already established with DAR?
Finding the best DAR ancestor
Go to https://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search/default.cfm?tab_id=0
and look up each ancestor by state. However by joining a DAR Chapter, the registrar in that chapter will be happy to help you find the easiest to prove. That will be a descendant of that patriot to whom it is the easiest for you to prove a relationship. Again, a chapter registrar will be happy to help you find that connection, and if there is a already a member in DAR to who is the closest relative to you.

Thanks! How can I join a
Thanks! How can I join a chapter if I've not yet "proven" the lines (though I'm sure they're valid)?

attending a chapter
I'm in the process of joining. While I'm waiting for some vital records to come in, I'm welcome to attend meetings. Also, the registrar will help you gather the materials you need, as will someone from the state who helps you understand what is needed while you are choosing a chapter.

Very Helpful
I have been a DAR member for 40+ years, thanks to an application submitted by my grandmother. I learned so much from this talk and have a whole new set of records to search, thanks to this program.
