Our Online Records Platform features religious records—including birth, marriage, and death records—from over 120 congregations across New York State. 

A benefit of membership in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is access to our online records, many of which cannot be accessed anywhere else online. 

ohn E. Lewis was a New York resident who wrote in his diaries every day for seventy-seven years and captured life in New York during the era. 

The NYG&B’s eLibrary collection of cemetery abstracts of New York State (and bordering locations) comprises records from New York State cemeteries, some dating back to the mid-seventeenth century. Holdings include:

“This volume is now much ill used and very little cared for in that office,” wrote J.H. Jones in 1898 of the inventories for 1730-52 which resided in the Surrogate’s Office in Manhattan.  The records for 1776-86 fared no better and he noted that the first 44 pages of this volume are missing.  Mr.

Prompted by New York City's northward growth, the Consistory of the Dutch Reformed Church of Harlem purchased a plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in 1869.

Since its founding in 1816, the American Bible Society has developed an extraordinary collection of bibles in most of the world’s languages. Many of the bibles in the ABS collection were once privately owned and contain family records that have not been available elsewhere.

The eLibrary contains the two volumes entitled Minutes of the Orphanmasters of New Amsterdam 1655 to 1663,translated and edited by former New York State archivist Berthold Fernow and published in 1902.

After being carefully inspected by John R. Totten, a member of the NYG&B Society, it was declared in 1913 that the records of the female descendants of Elder William Brewster were the most “valuable manuscript donation our Society’s library has ever received.” [NYG&B Record, 44: 214]
