[S10] Irish Research Update: Best Sources and Methods to Unlock Your Family’s Records
Use this thread to discuss Irish Research Update: Best Sources and Methods to Unlock Your Family’s Records, presented by Terry Koch-Bostic.
Session Description
Researching ancestors born in Ireland has become less difficult in recent years as more records become digitized and freely accessible. But discovering their origins in a townland can still be a major hurdle. Discover methodology and records that can help solve that problem.

Great talk! Do you have any additional advice for a trip to research in Northern Ireland, rather than Republic of Ireland? (Esp. as to a particular genealogist to work with?) Would going to Dublin still be advised? thanx!
Eastern County Galway
I have worked with the East Galway Family History Society. They told me that Roman Catholic records for the Eyrecourt parish church did not start until 1868. My great grandfather was born in 1853. Any suggestions for other sources of his birth? He was born and raised in the townland of Abbeyland.
The East Galway Family History Society put me in touch with a second cousin once removed and she took me to the house that she was born and raised. She told me that was where my great grandfather was born and raised.
No. Ireland
My ancestor, surname Logan, was born in Co. Antrim per family Bible, arrived NYC around 1800. Suggestions re finding his family in Ireland. Thanks!
Pre-1750 Research
Great session, Terry! Thank you.
I have done the exhaustive research you've suggested. I've even set up a session with NYG&B and a few sessions with FamilySearch for more help. My ancestor came to the US around 1755 from Co Down, and died in 1796. Another person with the same name, from the same location, came around the same time, but settled in PA. I have been able to trace him as far back as in Ulster County, NY in 1788, but no further. I've searched FANs, land records, wills/probate, church records, town histories, etc. I found his wife's family, which also came to America around the same time, from Co Atrim. I've searched both names in Ireland, but his wife was apparently born in Orange Co, NY. About every 6 months or so, I go back through what I've done, hoping to find something new... Any suggestions? Thank you, Margie
