[S01] New York State Censuses: You Won’t Believe What’s Hiding in There!

Use this thread to discuss New York State Censuses: You Won’t Believe What’s Hiding in There!, presented by Jeanette Sheliga.

Session Description

New York State conducted 10 State censuses between 1825-1925. Some of the questions asked for the State censuses provide details prior to the beginning of civil registrations and decades before a similar question was asked on the Federal censuses. If you have New York State genealogy research to do, this is a record collection that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with!

Hello!

Did you know that the 1855, 1865, and 1875 NYS censuses showed relationships to the Head of Household? That type of question wasn't asked on the Federal census until 1880!

There are so many wonderful nuggets like that one in the NYS censuses. I'm looking forward to Saturday's session and please let me know if you have any questions! Jeanette

Thank you!

Hi, I just watched your session on-demand. Thank you for clarifying about the different schedules in each state census. When searching, we are so inclined to "search quickly", and it is easy to forget about the other schedules after you find your ancestor on the population schedule. I enjoyed and learned much!

New York City census

I just watch the lecture on demand. A question was asked if the NYC State census (assuming the Boroughs also) were available. Most of them are not. It looks like Kings county has a lot of years but the rest of the Boroughs are mostly not available which is a great shame. Wonder what happened to them? This was a really good session. Thanks for holding it.
