Coroner's Reports, New York City (1823-1842)

Kenneth Scott

This work contains approximately 5,000 decedents, who have been listed in alphabetical order with the date of inquest. Over 1,000 unidentified decdents (mostly drownings) have been omitted.

Each report, signed by the coroner of the time and his jury of 14, normally gives at least the cause of death, country of origin and age of each decedent. As ships appear frequently, there is also a list of 180 vessels mentioned in the records.
