with the portrait indicates that it was distributed from the estate
of Richard Delafield, Tuxedo Park, NY to General John Ross Delafield.

Five Delafield
Brothers and the Father, Morton

(1876-1935) c. 1926. The painting is a composite work from an early photograph
of the five brothers. The sixth subject, standing on the upper left was
not
in the original photograph, and is a portrait of the father, John Delafield,
copied from an earlier painting. Seated, left to right are: Dr. Edward
Delafield
(1794-1875), Major Joseph Delafield (1790-1875) and Henry Delafield (1792-1875);
standing, John Delafield (1748-1824); Richard Delafield (1798-1873), Brigadier
General, Corps of Engineers, and Rufus King Delafield (1802-1874). The three
brothers, Edward, Joseph and Henry died within a three-day period of pneumonia
and related causes. A memorable triple funeral was held. 37 x 57 in. Signature:

Pickersgill, British (1782-1875). The subject in a three-quarter
torso pose is seated on a red chair holding a green book, wearing a
gold key on chain. He is husband of Charlotte Delafield, whose portrait
is also in our collection. General John Ross Delafield in his definitive
work The Delafield Family (1945) states that Joseph was the son of
Joseph
and Frances (Combe) Delafield of the brewery in Castle Street, Long
Acre, England. The painting had been located in "Jenny's room"; from

1924. The 7/8 torso figure facing right is seated in a carved armchair with
brown leather seat and back. An ornate carved fireplace is in the rear of
the subject, and a portion of a fine desk and chair are shown on the subject's
right. The plaque on this portrait, formerly owned by the National Park
Bank
of New York, reads "Director 12/26/90; Vice President June 16, 1896-September
1, 1902; President June 5, 1900-September 1, 1922; Chairman of the Board
