The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society

NYG&B Record The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record was founded in 1870. With its long history of scholarly publication, the Record is an essential New York source for genealogists, historians, and biographers. Most Record articles focus on families that lived in New York State. None of the material has previously appeared in print (or at least not in acceptable form). The Record is published four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Patricia Law Hatcher, F.A.S.G., succeeded Harry Macy Jr., F.A.S.G., F.G.B.S., as editor of The Record, beginning with the October 2006 issue. Mr. Macy served as editor for twenty years, beginning in 1987.

What Will You Find in the Record?

Every issue of the Record contains a mix of articles and regular features. The articles may be any of the following types:

Compiled genealogies of families that lived in New York or adjacent areas, usually beginning with the immigrant and continuing for three to five generations. These articles illustrate the proper use of sources available for a particular time and place and a proper method of presenting genealogy in print.

Solutions to specific problems illustrating the application of research techniques to difficult areas of New York genealogy, and often correcting previously published work.

Immigrant origins of New York family founders are constantly being discovered, and these articles show the sources that are available for this type of research and how they were utilized in particular cases.

Source material transcribed or abstracted from original New York records may include church registers; tax rolls, censuses, or other lists of inhabitants; muster rolls; newspaper extracts; wills; deeds; or naturalization records. The Record also publishes private family records, such as those found in Bibles.

Regular Features of Each Issue

Book Reviews are an important feature of every issue. Books donated to the NYG&B may be the subject of brief but critical reviews, provided they are relevant to research on New York families. Authors and publishers are encouraged to donate review copies of their books to the Library, specifying that they are requesting a review in the Record, and giving price and ordering information.

Subscription Information

A subscription to the Record is included with membership in the Society. For libraries, a subscription to the Record and the Researcher is available for $30 per year.

Indexes

An every-name index is published separately at the end of each year, and mailed with the following January issue. An index to over 1,000,000 names found in all issues from 1870 through 1998 has been compiled by Mrs. Jean D. Worden and is available from the Society on CD-ROM. This CD also contains lists of Record articles by title, author, and date. See our Catalog, which is available online in Adobe Acrobat™ (PDF) format: catalog.pdf

Articles in the Record are indexed by subject in the PERiodical Source Index, or PERSI (1870-to date), available at HeritageQuest Online. A more detailed subject index is The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 113 Years Master Index 1870-1982, by Jean D. Worden, currently out of print but available in many libraries. To supplement Mrs. Worden's index the Society has published Subject Index to Articles in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 1983-2005, which is available online.

Standard Source Abbreviations

Articles published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record between 1933 and 1996 had sources cited in the text, and the citations used a standard set of abbreviations or acronyms for major New York sources. A list of abbreviations is available in Research Aids.

Advertising

Advertising space is available for publishers and professional researchers who specialize in New York State genealogy and history. Rates will be supplied on request. Since space is limited and often booked on a long-term basis, prospective advertisers may have to be placed on a waiting list.

Back issues

All issues of the Record from 1870 through 1960 are now available on a series of CD-ROMs published by the Society. Copies will be made of Record articles for a fee of $5.00 plus .35 per page and the cost of postage. Copies are available for purchase by emailing publications@nygbs.org or calling the Publication Sales Department at (212) 755-8532, ext 209.
