Hudson County Genealogical and Historical Society

From the founding of New Netherland, to the peak of immigration through Ellis Island, and into the modern age, the diverse people and colorful history of Hudson County, New Jersey, have been indelibly linked to New York. It is quite common for someone researching ancestry in the state of New York to find personal connections to Hudson County and vice versa.

Since its inception in 2007, the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society has endeavored to help members explore their ancestry and delve into the county’s rich history, which far transcends notable figures like Frank Hague and Frank Sinatra.

Recently, the HCGHS was awarded the J. Owen Grundy Award from the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy for its “highly informative website.” Half of all members reside outside of New Jersey, in 21 states and in foreign countries such as Northern Ireland and Australia.

Collections

The HCGHS has a growing number of collections of images, family histories, and other records. Some are made available to the public while others are only available to HCGHS members.

Current Publications:

  • National Archives and Records Administration Films — Formally acquired in October 2011, these microfilms are on loan from the HCGHS to The New Jersey Room at The Jersey City Free Public Library. In addition to immigration, naturalization, and census information relevant to Hudson County residents, these records also include information pertaining to participants in the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War II.
  • Hudson County WWII First Round Draftees — Index of nearly 170 young men from Hudson County, drawn in the first round draft lottery.
  • West New York Memorial High School Yearbook — Indexed names of graduates from West New York Memorial High School in the 1920s.
  • Bayonne City Directory 1914-1915 — Viewable online via Yudu viewer.
  • The Descendants of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle — A member of “The Twelve Men,” the advisory council to Gov. Kieft, the first representative body in New Netherland.
  • Hudson County Photographers Database — Database of photographers active in Hudson County in the 19th century.

Newsletter

Hudson Roots is the quarterly HCGHS member newsletter, available digitally or in paper form. Its varied content highlights the unique people, events, and organizations that have shaped Hudson County through the years. Members are strongly encouraged to make contributions, such as genealogical success stories, historical research, and requests for assistance with family history brick walls.

Meetings & Events

Monthly meetings are held from October to June, typically on the second Saturday at 11am. Locations are announced in advance. Meetings commence by addressing updates on society administration and projects, followed by a workshop or presentation by a guest lecturer. Guests are welcome. Members may download meeting recordings as podcasts.

While the HCGHS does not accept requests for genealogical research from non-members, all are welcome to attend one of our public events and browse our public collections as formal membership is considered.
