Finding Aids for New York State Censuses in the NYG&B Collections

A mid-decade census was taken by New York State every ten years for the period 1825-1875, then again in the years 1892, 1905, 1915, and 1925. However, not all of the schedules survive for each county and each census year. The publication New York State Census Records, 1790-1925, compiled by Marilyn Douglas and Melinda Yates, Bibliography Bulletin 88 (Albany: State Education Dept., 1981) [NY G 12.814], is a good general guide to the years and locations of surviving records. (Note that this publication is being updated to reflect changes over the past sixteen years.)

The NYG&B Library's collection includes all surviving microfilmed New York State census records for the period 1825-1925.

In comparison to the indexes available for Federal census records, relatively few have been compiled for the New York State censuses. Those that do exist have been done for an individual county. None has been compiled on a statewide basis.

More common than indexes are published transcripts or abstracts of the state census records, mainly for individual towns. Those that include original page or household numbers permit the user to find an entry on the microfilm copy of the census in order to check the accuracy of the transcription or to locate additional information not included by the abstractor. In cases where the material is published in a periodical and is arranged in the original order of the census (rather than alphabetically by surname), the issue or annual index to that periodical may need to be consulted in order to locate an entry of interest.

Following is a list of indexes, finding aids, and published transcripts or abstracts that can be found in our Library. Note that those published in periodicals were located by consulting PERSI (PERiodical Source Index, published by the Allen County Public Library Foundation [CS 42.11 A4]); however, only those articles published in periodicals held by our Library are included below. Likewise excluded are vital records abstracted from the state census (e.g., Civil War deaths from the 1865 census) or abstracts including only certain segments of the population (e.g., Chautauqua County residents born in Rhode Island). The thorough researcher will want to check PERSI for other references.
